Southern Light Music - Ian is Southern Light.

Southern Light is the performance name of Ian Zierk and is taken from our home town where the lighthouse is at the southern most point of the community overlooking the heads. Southern Light is a beacon of safety and refuge or a distant light to come home to- it all depends on your perspective.

Ian has been playing music for too many years to count but began with singing the pop tunes of the day from an early age. Playing brass instruments in the high school band grounded his musical knowledge before self taught guitar commenced in the early teen years. Since then guitar and singing the songs of the day have been a social part of Ian’s life.

Especially influenced by the musical styles of Jim Croce, Don McLean, Bob Dylan , James Taylor, The Beatles (of course) and Australia’s own Mike McClellan, Leonard Cohen and many others. Ian chooses songs with good melody and a story line worth telling. Ian has a broad range of material from which to choose. From pop, country, rock, folk, ballads, sing-along’s there is always music for any occasion. In recent years Ian has combined travel across Australia taking his guitar and performing to a variety of audiences- ie anyone who would listen. A recent holiday tour provided opportunities in Ireland to play a few Irish songs including the newly minted “An Olde Irish Ballad” co written with Michael Hanley, without offending our Irish friends.

More recently, encouraged by an earlier covers album – “Distant Light”- Ian has put together –“Late Harvest EP”- a four song CD of originals with co-writer and producer Michael Hanley. More songs are in the pipeline for the “Late Harvest LP”.
