Current band lineup includes Gypsy original - James Walsh on Keyboards; with Bobby Jones on Bass; Bill Davis and Randy Keeley on guitars; Jerry Archambault on Drums; "Chico" Perez on percussion; and with Deonne Johnson, Dickie Jorgensen, and Paul and Elizabeth Stodolka on horns.

Gypsy began as the Twin Cities Band “The Underbeats” in Minnesota’s Midwest region in the 60’s. Traveling to LA in 1969 and landing a gig as the “Whiskey A-GO-GO” house band, they first signed with Metromedia Records and released their self-titled debut album in 1970. It was a double album containing thirteen songs. Although rare for a group to release a double album in the early seventies, especially as their first album, only Chicago had achieved that milestone before Gypsy!

According to James Walsh (keyboardist), there were two songs from this album released as singles ("Gypsy Queen (Part 1)" and "Dead and Gone”) that made it into the Billboard Top 100. They had received airplay on many Top 40 stations, and were filled with great keyboard and guitar work, with vocals that were tight and in perfect harmony. To this day, this album is a favorite among the group's fans!

Gypsy's second album entitled "In the Garden" was released in 1971, also on Metromedia Records. Again, the songs here had the classic "Gypsy sound", but no singles were released from this album.

The first two Gypsy albums soon went out of print when Metromedia Records fell on hard times. The positive consequence, if any, was that Gypsy's first two albums became very collectable and commanded high prices for the remainder of the seventies.

In 1972, Gypsy signed with RCA Records and released their third album "Antithesis". This single album carried on the Gypsy tradition of containing many very good radio-friendly songs, like "Antithesis (Keep Your Faith)", "Day After Day", and "So Many Promises". In 1973, Gypsy released their fourth album, "Unlock the Gates", also on RCA. Gypsy continued to mold their sound on this album, in part by incorporating the horn section from the group Chicago, who appeared on several tracks. However, after this album didn’t score well in the marketplace, Gypsy disbanded and went silent for several years.

Some reincarnations of Gypsy have occurred over the years since, including "The James Walsh Gypsy Band" in 1978. "Cuz It's You Girl" was one of the most notable tracks, and was very well-received by industry. But this would be the last album of new material released by the original core-group for the next two decades.

A new Gypsy re-emerged in the Twin Cities in the early 2000’s, again with James Walsh at the helm. With play-dates in St Louis as well as around the Twin Cities, they garnered the support and enthusiasm of both a new, and their old nucleus of fans. A CD of new material was released in 2015 (Yesterday – Today – Tomorrow) which brought them right back with great new songs, catchy melodies, classic Gypsy harmonies, precision keyboard and instrumental work, an air-tight horn section, and dynamic percussion work! Yes, they’re back!!

Additionally, over the past two years a Gypsy historical documentary ("Rock and Roll Nomads") has been filmed and produced which highlights the vast accomplishments, the overwhelming challenges, and the major disappointments of this young band's early years in trying to “make it big”. There were surprising adventures and great successes along the way; with many bumps in the road, including some show-stoppers, and several heart-breaks, too. But the band persevered!

This Gypsy story is vividly told by many of the past and present Gypsy members, while being interviewed about their often-shocking personal experiences with the band. Several Gypsy crew-members and supportive industry reps weigh-in with startling details, too. "Gypsy - Rock And Roll Nomads" IS a Must See!!

This film premiered in St Louis early in 2016, and has been accepted in two Minnesota film festivals this year, too. The complete Gypsy story is told in unabashed fashion, with a great Gypsy sound track – new and old songs - accompanying the historic footage filmed around the country. It's now available on DVD, for purchase online.

A complete collection of the first four entire Gypsy LP’s on CD, called “Anthology”, is also available online. And a new Gypsy CD, comprised of many of the early Gypsy Classics, is in the works and due out this year, too. It's called, “Vintage Gypsy - Timeless”.

Some of Gypsy's best known songs include: Gypsy Queen (Part 1 and 2), Dead and Gone, Around You, Blind Man, In The Garden, So Many Promises, and Need You Baby. (Really, there are too many to name them all!) More Concert dates are set for later this year. Please check the Gypsy website for upcoming performances, and come out to catch the shows!!
