At the age of four he learned to play the violin, taking lessons from a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Then along came the 60’s British Invasion and Erik fell in love with the guitar. 14 year old Erik’s band, Paper Fortress, garnered interest with Warner Brother Records. Producer Lenny Waronker took Erik under his wing, showing him the ropes in a big-time

recording studio. Soon after, Erik successfully auditioned for Iron Butterfly. He joined the group in 1968. His first recording with the band was the landmark

album, “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”. Erik’s innovative guitar work contributed to its phenomenal success and the album was the recipient of the first RIAA certified platinum album award. “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” wound up spending some 140 weeks on Billboard’s Top 200 Album Chart. Their

second album, “Ball, went gold in 1969. Before leaving the band, Erik lent his touch to the “Iron Butterfly Live” album. It also sold well, reaching the national Top 20. It was time for Erik to go solo.

In 1972 Erik, nicknamed the “Wunderkind” for his ingenious electric guitar style, wrote a number of rock tunes and ballads, then recorded 16 tracks at The Village Recorder. The other performers were an

were an eclectic mix of famous and well respected musicians of the day. Rumor has it Richie Hayward, the drummer from Little Feat, played on some if not all of these tracks. Most names unfortunately

have been lost with Erik’s passing in July 2003. One story says David Geffen, then of Electra/Asylum Records, offered him a record deal, but Erik didn’t feel he was ready yet, and turned him down, a decision he was to regret later. Another version says Erik turned Geffen down because he was offered less money than he wanted at the time. Either way, these tracks were buried in a closet until January 2003. Erik knew he had to get his

songs on CD before the magnetic tape disintegrated. The tracks were transferred at Penguin Recording Studio and a few copies went to friends. These rare and treasured recordings have previously been held tightly by those fortunate enough to have been close to Erik, although every once in a while a song or two has popped up on the internet. Now for the first time the digitally re-mastered versions of Erik’s music brings back the charm and excitement of the early 70’s.

Enjoy the influence of classic rock by a master.
