I studied film, and i hear many people with the complaint of TV being trash. For the most part they are right. The news is now infotainment, most programming consists of reality TV( if ever there was a a misnomer this would be it, these shows are quite the opposite of reality, if not for producers, cameramen/women, sets and editing they would not otherwise exist). On the other hand there are some incredible narratives and otherwise being spun, they are just few and far in between. I will concede that i am a bit of a geek but a cinephile too. That being said here are some of my favorites: The Shield(are you kidding me? anyone missing out on this show should kick themselves in the balls or vagina, respectfully. Literal jaw-dropping photography, hands down the best shot series on TV, not to mention some equally jaw-dropping acting and direction) Battlestar Galactica (i know i know i just got the nerd stamp but hey this is one of the best dramas out there, amazing narrative, thought provoking conflict, direction and photography nothing to snuff at either all on a sci-fi channel budget?) Dexter (reminds me of old school noir with the main protagonists narration, also ingenious ploy in using serial murderers) Weeds (hilarious plot, even funnier characters, main protagonist such a tragic figure) its all ways sunny in Philadelphia (slightly removed from reality but funny non-the less the acting seems very honest as does the dialogue) Curb Your Enthusiasm (probably for my money the most hilarious series on TV great cast, direction, dialogue and good narrative curve) alot more but here's a quick run down for me: mythbusters, democracy now!, charlie rose, dirty jobs, bill moyers journal, conan o' brien, tim and eric awsome show great job(shit your pants funny), venture bros, boondocks, ect.
hooooly shit so many um early early stuff first;(silent) metropolis, nosforatu, cabinet of dr. caligari, battle ship potemkin, birth of a nation(early racist propaganda) chaplin, buster keaton, films with rudolph valentino, jazz singer, city of lights, intolerance etc.

Joseph Cambel's series on the power of myths.
I feel like i should start with the what fascinated me as a kid. Strip comics were a passion: Calvin and Hobbes, Peanuts, Farside, Doonesbury, Maus, The Dreamer, and in order to better understand why comics are so important everyone should read; Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art by Scott McLoud --- As a teen i turned into a huge nerd and loved Tolkein, Brian Jaque, CS Lewis, you get the drill-- heres some of my favorites now: Thomas Mann, Jack Kerouac, F Scott fitzgerald, La Com?die Humaine(Balzac haven't read them all), Essays of Walter Benjamin, Hollywood Babylon 1&2(Kenneth Anger as well as his films) What Is Cinema?, by Andr?
