About Tim Buckley

Origin: Washington, D.C.

Decades: 1960's and 1970's

One of the great rock vocalists of the 1960s, Tim Buckley drew from folk, psychedelic rock, and progressive jazz to create a considerable body of adventurous work in his brief lifetime. His multi-octave range was capable of not just astonishing power, but great emotional expressiveness, swooping from sorrowful tenderness to anguished wailing. His restless quest for new territory worked against him commercially: By the time his fans had hooked into his latest album, he was onto something else entirely, both ... Read More

I came to TIm through Jeff, I find it a deeply bittersweet irony that so many young folks like myself would have never discovered Tim's majestic voice if not for the deeply strained, almost acrimonious relationship Jeff had with his father. The fact that both TIm and Jeff had magnificently transcendent voices and are often overlooked, yet nonetheless legendary performers is an irony of sublime proportions. Rest in peace Tim. I pray that you have found the son that you never knew in life.

Tim was my boyfriend in the 3rd grade and a life long friend. He died at about 27 years old--what a sad waste. In grade school he used to make siren noises, he always had a clean handkerchief (which the teacher pointed out), he was student body president in the eighth grade, and he had such a pretty mom who came to school for parties. He was a good friend all the way through high school, although he moved to another district. He was best friends with my high school boyfriend and our group, and he continued to come to our parties--which, by the way, did not have drugs or alcohol. What a shock when we found out how he died. The world lost more than a voice. It lost a wonderful smile.

Tim Buckley's 'Lorca' is one of my favorite albums. Tim's majestic, evocative voice, ambitious lyrics and unorthodox compositions make him, for me, stand out as a true original amidst purposeless swarm of glorified mediocrity that pervades the music industry and its poseurs.
