About VERBZ

Genre:
Hip Hop/Rap

There must be something special in the deep, blue waters of the San Francisco and San Pablo bays that connect the 100-plus cities and nine counties of The San Francisco Bay Area. As nerve center for such political factions as the hippie youth movement of the 1960s, headquarters to the Black Panther Party in the 1970s and setting for classic blaxploitation flick The Mack, the multi-cultural atmosphere has fostered an eclectic blend of music that stretches through time and across genres. Whether the psychedelic soul of Sly and the Family Stone, 1980s feel-good rock band Faith No More or hardcore Hip-Hop pioneers Too Short and E-40, the Bay Area is where history is made. Up next to add his name to the long list of Bay Area history makers is Pacifica, Calif.-based rhyme slinger Verbz. With confident, quick-witted rhymes and a fluid flow quite like no one else, the lyrical titan has raked up more than one million plays from his Myspace page and has had the Internet going bananas with his sizzling club banger “Big International” and pop-inspired single “Planet U” featuring fellow Bay Area alumnus Mike Marshall. With about 40 songs recorded, Verbz is ready to set the world on fire with the release of his as-yet-untitled album later this year. “I am a guy you can listen to bring out the best of your day,” Verbz explains. “When people listen to me, they’re going to be feeling good.” The third generation of Italian-American immigrants, Verbz was born Jason Verbelli in San Francisco. The only child to hard-working parents, young Jason was left alone a lot during his early years while his mother toiled day and night to keep food on the table. So to keep himself busy and out of the street, he picked up writing poetry at the age of nine. “We used to have financial problems in the family,” he recalls. “It was so bad that by the time I was six years old, we lived in seven different houses because we were constantly moving around. My mom wanted to make the best for me that she could, and she did.” Luckily, his mother landed a better job and when Verbz was nine, she relocated to the sleepy town of Pacifica, some 20 minutes south of San Fran. “I was in a place far from any gang violence, far from any negativity. I didn’t have to deal with any of that,” he recalls. “I was just a kid on the beach having fun.” Still penning the precious prose of his poetry over the years, Verbz discovered he had a knack for writing raps in high school. A few of his closest friends were pursuing careers in rap, and by his senior year, Verbz was in the studio laying down verses of his own. “I grew up listening to my parents’ music- everything from Motown to the Beatles. On my own, I discovered and listened to Snoop and Tupac,” he explains. “So when I started rapping, I input the two styles in my poetry- having a hip-hop beat with an old school theme.” Within no time, Verbz had sharpened his skills to perfection. Extremely versatile, he has worked with artists as diverse as former Pink Floyd and Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Butch Davis and Bob Dylan's back-up artists Regina and Anne Mc Crarey to much-respected rap artist J.T. the Bigga Figga and legendary Bay Area DJ/producer Sean T. He has also traded verses with slain Bay Area veteran Mac Dre, platinum-selling Aftermath Records emcee The Game on “Competition Cars” and multi-platinum rapper Nelly on the duet “Too Far.” Verbz is far from a rookie. Now riding off the success of sizzling club banger “Big International” and pop-inspired single “Planet U” featuring fellow Bay Area alumnus Mike Marshall, Verbz is on his way to giving his fan base more of what they have been thirsting for with the release of his as-yet-untitled album due later this year. “I’ve earned a lot of respect in music by being true to who I am,” says Verbz. “I’m not trying to follow someone else’s idea of what music should be. It’s all mine. And the fans love what I’ve been giving them.” And just because his skin tone may be a bit lighter than your average rapper, Verbz is in no way any less of a lyrical sharpshooter. Verbz is as tough as they come. “I'm not the third Vanilla Ice or the second Eminem but the first me,!” he vents. “I know where I come from and I don't let myself forget it!"
