The Hip Abduction mixes their unique version of reggae/rock with Zimbabwean, Malian, and Caribbean influences while keeping compositions distinctly western at heart to create what some refer to as World Pop. A little Paul Simon, Afro-pop, 70's roots reggae, and Zimbabwe's Oliver Mtukudzi have all played a role in shaping their sound.
Singer, guitarist, and songwriter David New developed The Hip Abduction theme from his years spent traveling the Caribbean and South America. Upon returning to the states David began collecting top musicians in the Tampa Bay Area in early 2005. He locked in with drummer Pat Hernly and bassist Chris Powers in 2006. Pat brings a unique set of skills, all stemming from his worldwide experiences and pending Doctorate in Music Education. Chris Powers has been on the music scene playing with regional and national acts across the east coast for over 8 years, laying down groovin-funky bass lines.
Trumpeter Kevin Clark join the band as the leader of the horn section in May of 2007 after many years of leading bands on cruise lines in the Caribbean. Shortly after, The Hip Abduction released their first EP titled "MOVE" in early 2008 to critical acclaim. Keyboardist Paul Chlapowski joined the band in January of 2009 with a classical background, influencing the groups sound yet further. In 2010, Dave Johnson (Saxophone) joined the group and has added a nice soul/blues addition to the sound.
As a whole, The Hip Abduction members have played and resided in the Caribbean, Micronesia, Ecuador, India, Philadelphia, NYC, DC, Baltimore, Asheville, and many more places.
