Bill O'Reilly called them deeply disturbed, they have received death threats for their outspoken views on the perils of religion, they achieved 1 million downloads of tracks from their debut album 'Memento Mori' and their Youtube views number well over three million. For an independent band that makes sweet sounding pop music, The Bastard Fairies have managed to cause quite a stir.
Comprising of singer Yellow Thunder Woman - a Native American princess from the Yankton Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, and Robin Davey - a multi instrumentalist Englishman from Stonehenge, the duo mixes playfully teasing melodies with lyrics that are wry and cutting and make music that is as polarized as their backgrounds.
'DIRTY SEXY KILL KILL' - the first single from the new EP 'MAN MADE MONSTER' is no exception. The lyrics tell the tragic tale of a man locked in a relationship with a crazy woman, "She's slowly killing you" the verse laments before the sparkling melody of the chorus urges , "Get out, get out, while you still can". It evokes the humorous and unconventional spirit that has earned The Bastard Fairies so many loyal followers.
Elsewhere Man Made Monster shows a band maturing both musically and lyrically with tales of obsessive love and relationships gone awry. 'Tool For Your Love', tells of doing everything to please ones significant other with the punch line "It's not working out". 'Fait Accompli' explores the perils of co-dependancy, and the title track 'Man Made Monster' is Tom Waits-esque stomp which has Yellow Thunder Woman pondering - "God just keeps me around, because he's strangely amused by me".
The duo are also formidable films makers having won 'The Stanley Kubrick Award For Bold and Innovative FIlm Making' at Michael Moore's Traverse City Film Festival, awarded by Moore himself for their hard hitting documentary 'The Canary Effect'. The movie delves deep into the hidden genocide of Native Americans and won the hearts of movie goers at film festivals across the world. The plethora of videos posted on The Bastard Fairies youtube site is testament to their visual creativity.
In a time where the music business has been collapsing around them The Bastard Fairies have been able to tread a new path. Having given their debut album away for free, long before Radiohead,NIN and the rest of the industry embraced the idea, they continue to embody the true independent ethic of the emerging new music business.
