Original Song Compositions Available -

Previously Unreleased Late 80s Hard Rock Material by Trauma/Rough Puppies

A song bundle of previously unreleased material recorded by the band Trauma in the mid to late 1980s has been uploaded to YouTube and Jango Online Streaming Radio, including a work tape recorded by Drew Canulette, who was later nominated for a Grammy for the first Soundgarden album. Drew later went on to also work with Nirvana, Neil Young, and many others. And in the mid-Eighties Drew was our sound guy :o)

Trauma never made it. In the early days working on Every Night Girl with Drew in his new studio, our band broke up. We had spent 3 ½ years woodshedding this material, and then began working with Drew, so prior to that there were few quality recordings…just 5 or 6 attempts and a boombox for rehearsal.

In the spring of 2017 I bundled the material up and released it “as is” on CDBaby. To my surprise, as badly as it is recorded, iHeart, Spotify, and all the mainstream online streaming and download services accepted it. And since then, three of the songs have earned Pop Scores of 90 or higher on the Jango Online Streaming Radio “Rock” charts as of Nov 2017: Every Night Girl, Thrill of the Fall, and Still Life.

I played with the material the other day for the first time in a long time, and with dropped tuning, guys and gals, there might be some 2018 hits there. In the 90s, this material wouldn’t have cut it. But down/drop tuned in 2018, you’ll have modern hard rock material very similar to Pop Evil, with some of it closer to the hard rock/pop “diddies” of The Pretty Reckless style.

Easiest to hear this material with headphones and then roll the bass up as far as you can take it before it blooms. And of course, this is 120 dB material that was written to be played LOUD! We primarily broke up over the loss of our lead singer, and he does not appear on these recordings.

You can find 11 of our 16 songs on YouTube. Just search for Trauma by the Rough Puppies and you will find the 11 songs from our CDBaby release in 2017. The name “Trauma” was since used by another band, so I named the album Trauma and our band the Rough Puppies, the pet name Drew had for Wild Dogs, another band Drew was working with at the time. Deen Castronovo was the drummer for Wild Dogs, and then later went on as the drummer for Bad English, Ozzy Osbourne on his Ozzmosis album, and then for Journey on their last 5 albums. Yes, we were running in the fast lane back then, and you’ll find that this is not garage band material.

Our other 5 songs appear exclusively on Jango radio, as I found and salvaged them after the CDBaby release.

Every Night Girl is the one that Drew touched…it was supposed to be our breakthrough song. What remains is a work tape that Drew made for us to take home overnight. He never touched the material again, and this is not a representation of this award winning producer’s work. Go to drop D or lower on ENG, and you’ve got a hit. I tried it in drop C and it is devastating…the progressions and melody line are still there, but now bigger and meaner than ever, and a young modern band could drive this material right down the center of the 2018 commercial Mainstream Rock highway.

The material is protected by copyright and available to cover by current bands if they want original material to expand their set list that no one has ever heard. This material is ripe for being re-recorded by a modern artist or band for commercial release in 2018 as material from possibly the best unsigned band "ever." Trauma was also on track to release an album through Dogfish Sound in the late 80s, just a year before Soundgarden. It was supposed to be Trauma, Soundgarden, and Nirvana.

There was a third band #The3rdBand

...but we self destructed.

Would love to hear a band down tune some of this material and modernize it a bit. If they let me know, I may show up to watch one of their shows! If a modern band can make a hit with one of these songs, we both win! A national release of any of this material would be “virgin” material, and as a whole, the 16 Rough Puppies songs on YouTube and Jango would be enough material to break a new national act.

I am a full owner of this material and able to authorize use of it if an artist or band wishes to pursue a more significant commercial project beyond "live" performances of these songs.

Have fun with it, and good luck!
