Reed Gratz


Reed Gratz is an active pianist/keyboardist and composer in Los Angeles,as well as Professor of Music and department chair at the University of La Verne.


Reed has played with George Russell, Herb Alpert, Bruce Hornsby, John Patitucci, Brandon Fields, Barbara Morrison, Alex Acuña, Bobby Shew, Buddy DeFranco, Scott Henderson, Konstantin Ruchadze, Max Bennett, Peter Noone, Jeff Healey and many others. He has composed music for more than a dozen plays. Six of his recent CDs are Below Sealevel and Piano, View From the South and The Reed Gratz Band featuring Michael O’Neil, Quaadrille, and Piano Two.


The Reed Gratz Band usually features Michael O'Neill, guitar (for many years with George Benson and Natalie Cole); Andrew Ford, bass (a former student of Reed's and bassist with Al Jarreau, David Crosby, Larry Carlton); Mike Bennett, drums (another former student who tours with Richie Kotzen, Hilary Duff); and Steve Biondo, percussion (a colleague in the Music Dept. at La Verne).


Reed has taught at Washington State University, University of Miami, University of Innsbruck, Utrecht Conservatory and Leiden University in the Netherlands, and as a visiting professor of music at Claremont McKenna College for ten years. He has been on the Advisory Board of the American Jazz Institute with Mort Sahl, Mark Masters, and Lee Konitz. Reed’s formal education was at Manchester College, New England Conservatory, and University of Miami.


Reed has been awarded a jazz composition grant from the NEA; a research grant in African-American music by the NEH; two Senior Fulbright Lectureships, one at the University of Innsbruck, the other, the Walt Whitman Distinguished Chair of American Culture Studies at the Leiden University; and the Excellence in Teaching Award for undergraduate faculty at the University of La Verne. He has received three Who’s Who Among American Teachers awards. Reed is a member of the La Verne Academy.


Reed plays piano, Fender Rhodes suitcase piano, Roland D-50, digital pianos, harmonium, and other keyboards.
