Taos-rooted songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and recording artist Nathan Pellerin composes distinctively rhythmic and honest songs that speak to the belief he deeply embraces: He is an instrument through which a higher force powerfully sings. His soulful, thought-provoking and intensely personal music, which he deems “IntelliFunk- GrooveHop” tells the story of the many twists and turns he has navigated throughout his exceptional journey. His original compositions and recordings present adventurous and absorbing stories that pay homage to the poets that have deeply influenced him, including The Beastie Boys, Phil Collins, Jimmy Bruno and the Smashing Pumpkins. And his innovative beats and ability to seamlessly mix genres to reveal the unexpected reflect his profound love of jazz and his meticulous attention to each detailed musical layer as well as his connection to the work of Miles Davis, Metallica, The Pharcyde, Us3 and Kool & the Gang.
Pellerin has experimented with music and continues to seek to absorb everything he can by exploring the capabilities of different genres and instruments. Amazed and completely energized by music as a child, he pored over albums by artists such as Kenny Rogers, Michael Jackson, Survivor and Eddie Grant, forging an emotional bond with each distinctive voice he heard, endlessly dissecting their many dimensions. Eventually, he discovered guitar and realized the exhilaration of using it to connect to specific moments in time and communicate his spirit’s singular voice. Also a trumpet player and skilled bassist, he has studied with notable guitarists, musicians and songwriters such as Roch Lockyer and others.
In 2004, Pellerin released his first album, Chaos in Taos. Throughout his career, he has perfected his production skills, designing and building his own studio and developing expertise in the subtleties of room acoustics and fine-tuned recording equipment. In 2009, he won a New Mexico Music Award for his single “Tight Grip,” which he also produced, engineered and mixed. After overcoming series of deep personal challenges, he is now emerging as a bold creative force. His latest album, Freaky Poppin’ includes the talents of drummers Gregg Thum and Norman Cutliff III as well as vocalists Katy Palmier and Erika Luckett and is available now on iTunes and Amazon.
