Elizabeth Grant (born June 21, 1986) better known by her stage name Lana Del Rey is an American singer-songwriter. Her stage name is a combination of the late old Hollywood actress Lana Turner and the Ford Del Rey. Grant was born in New York City and grew up in Lake Placid, New York. until she was fifteen when she left Lake Placid to go to boarding school. She is the daughter of domain investor Rob Grant. She currently lives in London. The stage name Lana Del Rey came about from managers who believed that a name reminiscent of the high society Hollywood glamour would better suit the kind of music that Grant was making.
She released an EP titled "Kill Kill" in 2009, under the name Lizzy Grant.
She also recorded a full-length album with producer David Kahne, which was shelved for unknown reasons. The album was called "Lana Del Ray a.k.a. Lizzy Grant". Note the spelling, "Ray" instead of "Rey". Her song "Video Games" was named "Best New Track" by Pitchfork Media and was featured on The CW TV-Series Ringer. Grant played her first US show at The Box in New York City on September 21, 2011. Her debut single "Video Games"/"Blue Jeans" was released by Stranger Records on vinyl on October 10, 2011 and digitally the following day. Tickets for Grant's show in London sold out in half an hour.
The EP for both of the singles "Video Games" and "Blue Jeans" reached the top five of the US iTunes Albums Chart only hours after its release. On October 11, 2011 she performed "Video Games" live on Later... with Jools Holland, her first live performance on UK television.
