A light haze lingers in the air, the balmy air filled by lights, house music, and the white noise of conversation. Then the room falls black and the dull roar of the audience builds. The lights go up in front of you, and one by one Kinetic takes the stage. Your adrenaline kicks with the drums of Andy Principe as he sits down and begins to play. The smooth, clean riffs strummed by Sam Davis on guitar mingle with deep, room-shaking notes plucked by bassist Joe Palamara. As a smile streaks across your face, the keys of Ryan Laney’s piano penetrate the air, and the passionate vocals of Jeff DeMars send your soul spinning into a music-induced frenzy, and your ears into melodic ecstasy.
This is Kinetic. Brought together by a strong desire to create music that captivates both the body and mind, Jeff, Sam, Joe, Ryan, and Andy write politically and historically motivated songs that blend the influences and styles of the pop, rock, funk, and hip-hop genres. Their unique and diverse individual backgrounds, experiences, and influences speak for their chemistry as a group, and their fervor for composing music that highlights these differences. The band came together and formed in Williamsburg, Virginia, each of its members hailing from a different region of the country, and possessing dramatically different musical and educational histories. However, rather than allowing these disparities to construct walls between them, Kinetic tore them down instead, integrating and exploring their differences to build an original, genre-bending sound distinct from today’s generic pop-rock driven world. Just as they have done as a band, Kinetic endeavors to integrate cultural and societal differences with their music in order to better explain and make sense of this modern and global world.
Kinetic released their debut album, Get Your Heavy Load Off My Pack Mule, on April 12, 2011. Featuring ten original tracks recorded and entirely self-produced over the course of a year within the cramped confines of a college bedroom, Kinetic’s first full-length effort aims to take you on a ride across a wide spectrum of musical genres, through American political history, and into the lives of its subjects.
