Genre: Alternative/Alt. Rock, punk, folk
Hoodoo Zephyr play progressive and occasionally aggressive Punk Folk music; we call it Polk Music, but others have called it ‘Rootsy’, ‘Spacey Punk Folk’, ‘Beefhearty’ and ‘a bit like Green Day…only better’. We consider no musical genre sacred and will happily plunder the musical possibilities of reggae, punk, folk, olde-worlde ballads, rock… and anything else that takes our fancy. This has led to some interesting musical concoctions.
The band is from Aberdeenshire; a 4 piece set up…
Freak – lead vocals, acoustic guitar, moothie, song-writing and, if you are lucky, some Mongolian throat singing.
Geoff – lead guitar, second vocals and stylish hat wearing.
Ken – drums, electrical gadgetry, van maintenance, general wisdom and the ability to make any hat look stylish.
Stuart – bass guitar, (ie 2 strings short of an ego problem), phone calls, ministering to the significant psychological needs of the rest of the band and engaging in a quest to find a hat that doesn’t look daft.
Freak has a long and colourful musical career, having played in bands all over Europe and, most recently, supporting Alabama3.
Geoff has musical attention deficit disorder and when he is not playing awesome lead guitar for the Hoodoos, he can be found working on his second CD, having launched CD no1, ‘No Regrets’ in 2011.
Ken has an unconditional love of all things musical, percussive and electronic…ideally all three… and is never happier than when he is playing ‘twisted reggae’. He has played the drums in several bands and is learning to count up to 4.
Stuart is the band newbie and somehow manages to combine a career as a Psychologist with playing the bass guitar in a Polk band.
Hoodoo Zephyr have been around for a few years, having reformed with a new bass player in 2010 after a 10 year sabbatical…while Freak was being musical in Paris, Holland and other, equally cosmopolitan, settings. The reformed Hoodoo Zephyr is once again building up a local following and is gigging up and down the country now.
Having previously recorded the CD ‘Egg’, we are currently recording a new CD that manages to sound bang up to date while being rooted in the kind of music that was filling venues a few years back.
