Genre: World, Alternative rock, Balkan
Darnakes were formed in 2002 when some weird and completely heterogeneous guys were called to join a two- brothers’ band that used to play traditional Greek music in outdoors festivals and that were now looking for musicians to perform their own compositions and cover some of their most beloved traditional songs.
Since then, lots of things changed, new members were added, others replaced and their music went through numerous different filters and influences. The mixing of Balkan and Greek music with completely different styles and artists like Goran Bregovic, Manu Chao, TOOL, Calexico, rempetika, Prodigy, Balkan and Mediterranean music, the Clash and many more has formed their style and could be described in excess as Balkan Gypsy Post Punk. In their concerts they perform their own compositions, as well as carefully selected covers from various countries, singing in Spanish, Greek, English, Italian, Serbian and Russian.
In 2005, their first full-length album, “Virgo”, the first link in their own view of the zodiac cycle was published by Ano Kato Records, a well-known indie label from Thessaloniki.
In 2010, their second album, “Libra, το προξενιό της Αντιγόνης”, was published by Parousia.
They have performed in major festivals around Greece (Ardas River Party, Gaia Festival, Earth Festival, Nestorio river Party, GreenDay Festival, Dramaica Festival, Armenistis Camp, Antiwar Festival, KNE Festival, Antiracist Festival), abroad (OST Club, Vienna, Exit Festival, Ljubljana) and in live clubs in Greece (Principal Club Theatre, Ydrogeios, Gaia Live stage, Orient, Malt n Jazz, Ianos, Gagarin 205, Mylos live stage, Alavastron, Thimomeno Portreto and many more). They have supported international acts like Goran Bregovic, 17 hippies, KAL and many well-known Greek performers.
