Finding the meaning of humanity and all that is has to offer, good and bad, has been a task yet to be accomplished, but artists throughout history have attempted this almost impossible feat through their crafts as a way to express their theories and expose the injustices they perceive. Through song and lyric, the Organic Soul artist, Ayenn, has expressed his inner-most observations, showing, as many have in the past that he has also been aware of the sad realities of life.
Exposed to the virtues of an affluent American society, and the vices of the poverty-stricken realities of Haitian society, this Haitian-American artist has embraced both aspects of Haitian and American culture, allowing him to open up to the rich cultural, historical, and musical gifts the world has to offer. In essence, although his identity has been shaped primarily by Haitian and American culture, he is a true citizen of the world. Ayenn has allowed himself to be influenced by music of many genres made by musicians of many cultures and languages, and in doing so, has developed his own unique style.
Ayenn’s music is almost impossible to classify, and one would find it difficult to place his songs within a particular genre, but that is fine by him. He has never wanted to be locked in a musical box, wanting rather to be free to express his musical talents without limitation. Ayenn has always believed that prejudice towards certain groups of people, cultures, languages, or societies, has created a barrier to understanding and appreciating international music. This is a sad reality that has kept people from enjoying good music which has existed in the past, exists today, and will continue to exist in the future.
Ayenn has no desire to limit his influences nor does he have any desire to restrict his musical growth to just one genre. This is evident in the style of music he has created, which in reality is not really his creation, but rather a melting pot of musical genres found throughout the world. Listening to his music, one will immediately realize Ayenn’s passion and love for the piano, as this instrument is present in all his music. Ayenn’s music also expresses his admiration for the sound of classical strings and African, Haitian, Indian, and Latin percussion. His love of classical music is evident in many of his musical productions, yet it is not left alone, but rather accompanied by Hip Hop and R&B style beats, as well as Chill-Out pads. Clearly, Ayenn enjoys experimenting with different sounds that aren’t usually combined, but yet seem to please him as he creates his music.
Lyrically, Ayenn does not shy away from expressing thoughts that many among us feel, yet are afraid to share. Events in his life and in the lives of others throughout the world are reflected in his lyrics, and they reveal that Ayenn is in tune with the harsh realities that people deal with on a daily basis.
Growing up in Haiti, Ayenn was exposed early to the harsh conditions of a third world country. He observed poverty on a level not known to many, and with no one to guide him or explain to him why so many suffered from living conditions not fit for even an animal, he quickly formed a cynical view of humanity that has tempered over time. Eventually, after moving to America, he witnessed how many Americans took for granted the opportunities that America had to offer. The stark contrast between American wealth and Haitian poverty was difficult for him to comprehend at first, but he slowly learned to appreciate it, and through song and lyric, he found an outlet for expression of that understanding.
Although Ayenn embraces the impossibility of classifying his music, he has embraced the term Organic Soul as a way to describe it. This classification was coined by his musical mentor, Kauvon, who Ayenn has admired as a multi-talented producer and musician, but even more as a friend for many years. Kauvon’s influence on Ayenn’s music is evident, and the two have collaborated several times on duets and production. Ayenn’s other musical mentor is not one he has had the pleasure of meeting, but one who has nonetheless influenced him musically and lyrically throughout the years; Sade Adu. Lyrically speaking, Sade has thought Ayenn that there is nothing a song-writer can’t write about. He has learned that expression of the soul is multi-faceted, and to inhibit it is tantamount to censorship.
Ayenn invites you to listen carefully to his music and lyrics. He believes that an open mind will reveal his music to be introspective, mellow, thought-provoking, and smooth; the very definition of Organic Soul Music. Although Ayenn’s debut English-language album is entitled “He Walks Alone” he understands that he does not walk alone, but amongst the many talented and open-minded human beings the world is fortunate to have. Walk with Ayenn as you journey into the world of Organic Soul Music; you will be pleased with what you find along the way.
