Arboles is the brainchild of Dan Schwer, principal songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist. After writing and performing for six months Marc Ikeda joined the effort, accompanying him on drums. As former schoolmates they have an undeniable comfort within each other’s playing style, allowing them to mix their varied influences seamlessly. The Arboles EP is a collection of six songs, five of which were recorded in Oakland in February and one from Arboles’ live performance in March on KSUN Radio (Sonoma). Schwer’s songwriting finds itself at times indie-folk and at times a modern dark blues. His vocals rise with emotional intensity as the album progresses. Lyrics with intense imagery and analogies portray his stories, sometimes personal and sometimes imaginative. Ikeda’s drumming provides a steady, full accompaniment; taking the songs from their humble beginnings to their powerful conclusions. His background in hip hop and jazz drumming provide a unique perspective to a music that rarely comes in contact with urban influences. The Arboles EP doesn’t stand still, its songs are constantly moving each with its own sound and purpose.
