“World music at its best: excellent instrumental performance and musical depth.”
Hailing from Israel, a cultural axis-point where East meets West, Alila is a fresh, young ensemble producing original ethno-fusion music from the roots up. Employing the “intoxicating instrumental potpourri” (Israel Today) of oud, violin, bass guitar and percussion, Alila draws from a diverse spectrum of sounds and styles to produce consummate fusion music that is at once challenging and satisfying.
Founded in 2006, Alila has worked towards their debut recording entitled At Isak’s, which was produced and officially released in April 2010 by “the 8th note” a major local and international label. Featuring all original compositions, At Isak’s is the culmination of the individual players’ worldly studies and musical journeys harnessed toward the creation of a sensitive, energetic and truly unique ethno-fusion record.
In addition to headlining their own performances in Israel and abroad, Alila has also had the pleasure of collaborating with such world-renowned musicians such as Shlomo Bar and Yair Dalal, among others. Alila concluded 2011 with a successful tour in Poland, where they appeared as featured performers in two major world music festivals and played to sold-out audiences in clubs and music venues throughout the country."
From Jewish Yemenite melodic overtones, to enchanting Indian baselines; from Balkan-Romany (Gypsy) street party to African groove explosion; from heavy Egyptian dharbuka to soulful American Funk Alila fearlessly and seamlessly weaves a rich tapestry of sound and style in a humble and honest expression of modern musical “unique fusion.” (Israel Today)
“The music of Alila stands at an axis between East and West, mesmerizing its listeners to a world of rhythms and sounds inspired by various musical traditions… This eclectic fusion highlights the surprising similarities that the East and West share in music. The sounds unite together to form a homogeneous, refreshing and altogether original musical line.
Alila’s members demonstrate a level of creative modesty which blends into an artistic revelation that is mature yet remains current, temperamental yet maintains controls. At the Inbal Ethnic Center, the band performed world music at its best. The compositions and executions were outstanding and the audience was enthralled by the music, altogether creating a dynamic atmosphere that was charged with energy, feeling, and a heightened sense of unity.”
