Although born in Paris, Cyril FORMAN, a.k.a. Atissou Loko, spent all his childhood and part of his teens in Haiti. But it is back in France, at 22 years old, that he made the decision to become percussionist. The remembrance of the sounds of the Haitian country helped him to develop an original mix between memory and passion.
Atissou LOKO returned to Haiti in 1993 in order to deepen his knowledge of the country’s traditional music. He met there the founders of the Sanba movement who dared to mix the ceremonial vodou drum with sounds used in rock or jazz music (Boukan Ginin, Foula). Back in France, he decided to create a band in accordance with this musical principle : Adjabel was born !
Bearing his own cross-cultural background in mind, he gathered musicians from different musical genres in order to enrich and make accessible an unknown but major contributor to the evolution of contemporary music : the tradition of the vodou drums used to call the Gods during the daylight, the drums of the Kavalie Ounto, Djawento on which the Wonsi dance and the Sanba sing.
This vodou can mainly be found at Lakou Souvenans (Fon), Lakou Soukri (Congo), Lakou Nan (Yorouba), mythical temples of the Gonaives plain, real melting pot of the old African culture in Haiti.
Adjabel reached another dimension in 1997 with the arrival of lead singer Mariame KADI. Not only did the young woman diversify the repertoire of the band with her own compositions but she also gave Adjabel a voice able to express the blues, the melancholy, the exhilaration found in traditional songs.
Muslim, native from the Comoro Islands, Mariame takes position in her songs against the different kinds of abuses endured by women and also sings the long privations of freedom suffered by all the "children of the colony".
Singing in French, English or Creole, Mariame became the perfect representative of a band that stands for both cross-culture and roots.
Atissou and Mariame were joined by rapper of Egyptian origin Salah Maïga for their first two releases : the EP "Tanbou Base Music (Racine 1)" (2000) and the album "Akoustik Résolution (Racine 2)" (2001).
They then released "Origines (Racine 3)" in 2004 with Creon Music. After the departure of Mariame Kadi, Cyril Forman recorded a new album in 2007 : "Caribbean Journey (Racine 4)" (Iris Music/Harmonia Mundi) with various famous guest vocalists mainly from Haiti or the French West Indies.
