If it were not for the Yardbirds and the Band Of Joy, there would be no Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page's penchant for incorporating both British ancient Folk music and Middle Eastern music with a heavily, Rocked, almost Classically constructed Blues music, and Robert Plant's urge to weave ancient British legends and myths into the work, really works for me. Though Metal arrangements, in their various subsets, derive themselves from Led Zeppelin's cosmic Blues hybrid, Led Zeppelin never considered themselves Metal. Which is ironic, since they are acclaimed as the progenitors and greatest Metal band. I love mixture of spiritual, sensual and visceral elements in the words, music, performances and recordings - an intense mixture of fantasy, sex and pain. They were an incredibly good Blues Rock band; and created some of the most memorable and enriching recorded songs, ever.
